This is a good quality watch, and it certainly can be made to run as well as it did when new.

Here's a few thoughts - if you open the back, on the balance cock you will see an arm running the length of the cock. This is the regulator, and you can move it to speed up (or slow down) how fast the watch runs. This grade has a "micrometric" regulator, which means that the end of the regulator arm (near the edge of the movement) rests in a little slot on a barrel-shaped nut that runs along a threaded (and slightly curved) screw. The edges of the barrel-shaped nut have little indentations on them - inserting a toothpick into the indentations, you can very carefully turn the barrel, which will incrementally slide the regulator arm across the length of the curved screw. But, this is really just intended for adjustments of less than a minute, not several minutes a day.

Second thought - mechanical watches need to be oiled every few years, so if you had the work done more than a few years ago, it might be time for a new cleaning and oiling.

Third thought - it wasn't cleaned or timed properly in the first place. Most places that advertise vintage watch repair don't do the work themselves, but send it out to who-knows-where, and the quality is sometimes iffy, corners are cut to save time, etc. Your best bet is to take it to someone who does their work on premises, so you can talk to the person who does the work. With a family piece, I think this is doubly important. You can use the referral service of the American Watchmakers Institute to find a certified watchmaker near you (www.watch-clock-makers.org). Or, I can recommend sending it Ed Ueberall at "The Escapement" (http://hometown.aol.com/stdwatch) - I have used Ed in the past, and can recommend him highly.
