I understand what you mean now, Jim.
In a very few instances, the case design might mean something specific to the owner (such as a Masonic design, or more commonly for a railroad association, such as the "Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers" or something similar). In the vast majority of cases (sorry, no pun intended), the design was, as you succinctly put it, "a design made by the watch case company, that caught the eye of the purchaser." Non-specific patterns, or those depicting birds, horses, locomotives, towns, etc. (as well as plain and unadorned cases) were all used during this era. Just based on the watch itself - other than what your family can tell you - your best clues as to who the original owner might have been is the year that the watch was made, that it's a large man's watch, that it's a watch of a person of means (or who would want or need a very high grade watch and so spend a large sum of money in that era - next to a house, a watch like this was probably the most expensive thing a person would own).
