BOCA RATON ? Vanessa Wolff was to be married next May. Her friend Jessica Boumans was to be a bridesmaid.
The two, along with two other friends, were having a girls' night out Friday when their dreams, and lives, came to an abrupt end.
Boumans, 23, originally from Westfield, N.J., and Wolff, 23, of Metairie, La., were at the intersection of West Palmetto Park Road and the southbound exit ramp to Interstate 95 about 2 a.m. when a 1998 Ford Explorer, driven by Edwin Perez, ran a red light and hit Boumans' 2005 Mercedes, police said.
Boumans and Wolff died at the scene. Paula Coccia, 23, of Pennsylvania, was taken to Delray Medical Center where she was in serious condition late Saturday. A fourth woman, Leila Storey, 24, of Orlando, received minor injuries.
Neither Perez, nor his passenger, Patrick Shelton, 31, of Boca Raton, was injured.
Perez, 31, of Boca Raton was arrested and charged with, among other things, reckless driving, DUI manslaughter and with the death of a fetus. Toxicology reports are pending.
"This is the worst nightmare of my life," said Paul Boumans from his home in New Jersey.
His daughter was working toward getting her master's degree in hotel and hospitality at Lynn University. He said Coccia had been his daughter's roommate in undergraduate school and was visiting.
Boumans described his daughter as a good girl.
"She never gave us one day of trouble," he said, choking up. "She was just a wonderful person."
Perez has a long driving record dating to 1993, including other DUI's that resulted in accidents, speeding, careless driving, driving without insurance or a license and driving with expired tags.
Boumans is survived by her parents, an older sister and two nephews. Her body will be flown to New Jersey.
