Subject: A Part of the Land

The feel of hot leather between my two thighs,
The glare of the sun that beats at my eyes,
The smell of the sage, and the taste of the sand-
Tell me I’m home, I’m a part of the land.

Long days in the saddle, in heat and in cold…
The years of hard labor will make a man old.
From sunup to sundown, but just so one knows-
I am not complaining, it’s the lifestyle I chose.

Some say I’m a cowboy, some say ‘buckaroo’-
I’m proud of the handle, for that’s what I do.
I can throw a “John Blocker”, or good “hoolihan”-
And I know the diff’rence, I’m a part of the land.

I’ll work without gripin’, as a matter of course-
But a job ain’t worth doin, you can’t do from a horse.
If I take your money, I’ll ride for your brand-
It’s the code of the West, and I’m a part of the land.

I’ve ridden the caprock, and ridden the plains-
Endured me some dust storms, and rode in the rain.
I love the long hours, I’ve ridden alone,
I’m close to my Maker when I’m on my own.

When my life is over, and my course is run-
Don’t grieve at my passing, my life has been fun.
Just carve on my marker, when at my grave you stand-
“In death, as in life-He’s a part of the land”.
