Subject: Remembering

It’s funny how years seem to soften,
The memories of hardships long gone.
The pain and frustrations do vanish-
And only the good parts live on.

We talk of good times and good partners-
Lament all that fun left behind.
Forgetting the heartaches and worries-
That once did bewilder our minds.

Like the times that my wife had those toothaches-
She’d cry every night at my side…
At the time I just barely made wages,
So I worried and fretted and sighed.

My children would oft need a doctor,
We’d doctor them best that we could…
It’s strange we forget all the bad times,
And only hold onto the good.

I’m glad that I once was a cowboy-
It’s a lifestyle I’ll never regret…
But along with our sweet reminisces,
There’s a pretty fair bunch of regret.

Like the patina formed on old silver-
Unused and discolored with age…
We had best blow the dust off our memories-
If we’d truthfully read the past’s page.
