Subject: The cancer vine

Cancer is aging wine
bursting from skin
unable to contain
the fermentation;
flowing from my throat
a bloody taste
not quite washed away.

I would not recommend any
vintage, no matter when bottled,
stored in some dark cellar
away from all light,
aging to perfect bitterness.
Pain and hurt
spilled on sterile ground.

Hand-me down illness
grandparent, parents
aunt, uncle, and a cousin,
we have all tasted the wine,
tasted the different years.
They have all passed on.

I am the lone wine taster
the glass is before me
pursed to my lips.
Let it be sparking grape juice
this time around
something with no kick.
