John... You are a fellow traveler. Ely could get rather cold
as it is at about 6300 ft elevation. However it could be colder still in Ruth and Kimberly due to having a higher elevation.

One morning as the graveyard shift got off one of the miners emptied the dregs of coffee from a Thermos as the crew walked down the RR tracks to the parking lot. There was enough coffee dregs that instantly (according to reports) froze and one of the miners slipped and hit his head.. and was killed in this freak accident.

During WW-2 copper was critically needed... The mines, mill and smelter were working at full capacity. Experienced miners were needed. This was a sudden change from the Depression. Then, again in about 1957 hard times again, so I packed up the family and left never to return.

This way of life just a memory. The company towns sold the houses and today the smelter and mill are gone and the headframes are weathering away. But all-in-all, this was a good time.
