Not a scam, but just good ol' Chemistry. There are several respectable companies that make these units. The cheap way is to get active charcoal and circulate water through it and then use chemicals to retrieve the gold out. Takes a little work but has been proved to be profitable.

Look at Thermodynes site for info on this and roll up yoursleeves and dig in. Then there's leaching of your concentrates that gets about 85-95% of the gold. Lots of ways to get the gold that most people don't want to be bothered with. Cool, more gold for me!
