The weather in western Nevada and Idaho can get real sticky at times. However the elevation is only about 4200 ft in the valleys. It is in eastern Nevada, with the valley floors about 6200 ft and many communities such as Ruth and Kimberly, Pioche, etc, where a sudden storm can be rough.

Back in 1949, those in Ely who lived im Murry Canyon got in and out of their houses via second story windows due to drifting snow.

About "Rypatch," as it is now called; those that have been going there over the past 30-40 years will remember L. Edward "Ed" Spires, just one of the many "single blanket" small mine owners making a living in the vast area.

Mr. Spires forged a living working in sections 20,24, and 30. He had to put up with unethical "whatever you wish to call them" gold crazy individuals who would sneak onto his claim and detect.

Ed was a neat old guy. He lived on his claim until his death about 4-5 years ago. Back in the 1980's, when gold spiked up past $800 Ed told me that one moonlit night he drove around and counted six vehicles parked on his claim.

One morning I was visiting him and he pointed out in a distance someone on a motorbike of in the distance but on Ed's property. Ed said the motorcyclest was detecting. If Ed would drive toward him, he would get onto his cycle and move off, then return after Ed Left. Ed being tha sort of man he was decided to just ignore him (However, at times he has been known to wave his hands and yell at the "jumpers."
Also at times Ed's vocabulary could be salty--!

When in Ed's area I sometimes would brave the barking dogs and stop; the dogs jumping at my truck door. If Ed would come out we would jaw a little about the earlier days--- Ed was originally from Arizona. Ed would sometimes invite me to a glass of vodka which I would politely turn down with the pretext that it would make me sleepy; true.

I have not been to Eds old camp for years; it was a spral of old equipment; a typical mining camp. I understand it has been mostly destroyed. Too bad. Ed build a home and lived there over many years and many bad storms; probably worse that the one now being referred to. Ed and his Misses, and maybe sometime---but I never met them-- his kids lived through thick and thin.

Ed was an example of the pioneer spirit and lived through changing times. Majuba became "his mountain."

From gold being bought by licenced gold buyers to the open market. He saw the coming of detectorists--- hordes of which were on RR property, sections 17 and 19.

Ed was sometimes weather bound on his claim. Maybe it could be a week or more before he could drive into Lovelock and get supplies or his mail.

Noe let me tell you about Bob Chandler who lived over the hill at Scossa--- another story for another time.
