Right on as to drywashing Jim! As far as a chest mount detector - I would not get a detector unless I could both chest mount it and stem mount it. I chest mount my Gold Bug 2 at times if I am hunting for most of the day and it really helps. BUT, at times it is a pain as the cable gets caught in the Manzanita, weeds, etc. I have tried the GMT and the Goldstrike (can be chest or hip mounted) -- My choices for best non pulse induction detectors are the Gold Bug 2 (VHF)and the Whites GM-3 (VLF) with the small 6" coil. Both of these detectors are capable of being chest, hip and stem mounted. Good luck in your choice, and if possible try before you buy!
