Subject: Strategy for detecting dry washes?

Hi there,

Close to where I live there are a few area's that were heavily mined during the late 1800's and into the early 1900's. As far as I know it was all hardrock mining though. There are a dugouts and mines in the hills above the wash, and I was wondering what my best strategy would be for detecting the area. Every now again story's pop up about somebody, who is walking there dog in the wash, finding a nugget so I'm optimistic.

The wash is huge though, and I really have no clue where to start. Should I just pick a mine and detect the area of the river directly below it? Or should I start all the way up in the mountains at the head of the river? The river is long and wide, and there are large levees/benches on either side. Do I detect the center of the river? The levees? Should I criss cross the wash?

I know the basics (thanks to Jim McCulloch's "Advanced Nuggetshooting" guide), like looking for area's where the water has been impeded, and on the inside of bends, but other than that I'm really clueless. Got any tips for me?

Derek
