Randy, I did not meet Charlie's mom, but knew about the coffee pots and how Charlie first got the Model "T." I knew it needed a headgasket and as I had several, I gave one to Charlie so he could get it running again. The last I remember it was again not running as it needed more serious engine/transmission work.

Charlie may have been working esewhere in the early 1960's, but would visit Randsburg area, and of course Goler Heights; and this is how I first become acquainted with him.

As I vagely recall his wife died(?) and Charlie recently remarried. I met his wife several times, they were nice people; your Uncle Charlie Behrens was a "pioneer" in everyway. He bridged the gap between the earlier days to the recent in the history of the broad area surrounding Goler Gulch.

Actually, I moved down to So. Cal in 1961 from Lovelock, Nevada, as our oldest son needed special schooling. I first came out to Randsburg area in 1962 and got aquainted with Mr. Harold Beck and we "hit it off" and I was able to do some drywashing with him on his claim.

Shortly after I became met Nick Montoya (Nick's Nugget) as he was a welder in the Tin Mill Maintenence Shop at Kaiser. At this time I was then a foreman in the Tin Mill Roll Shop and met Nick due to working with him. At this time Nick had several placer claims in the nearby Summit Diggins area.

Actually, I started nugget shooting about 1975 using BFO, TR, and then VLF-TR machines.

My book, Vol 3, is now being revised as the 7th Edition. It got its ancestrial start as being a follow-up article on detecting drywasher piles which was published in W&E Treasures S&G (1982).

Rosemary thought it was too long (then about 3000 words)for the 1983 S&G and would not use it. By a coincidnce Willie Merrell and I both self published our original text by Xerograph in 1984.

Willies booklet was printed by White's and mine by "Mountain Publication." Willie and I were friends, not competitors, Our original booklets were "pathfinders." Sadly Willie passed away before I could buy him a cup of coffee as I had lost a bet with him. If you have, or can find a copy of Willie's booklet. "Those Elusive Gold Nuggets," it was written with Benson Canyon in mind; and Benson is the next canyon to the west of Goler.

The PCSC bought Willies claim, the "Red Chispa," about 1990. The Taft club contols the property just below the Chisa.

The Broad area--- the Randsburg/Summit Diggins/ElPaso Range is still a good place to nugget shoot.
