Reg, thanx for your input. Actually, Compass did experiment with auto-tune on their 77's. A model called the 77B Auto was out for awhile, but not many were sold. That was about the time discriminators were becoming all the rage, and people wanted to pass pulltabs etc... The 77B Auto had 2 auto-tune speeds: fast & slow. The fast speed was so fast, you'd get overshoot rebound signals. The slow speed was ok I guess, but what that machine lacked was the option to turn the autotune off, and be able to dial in, and stop on top of the target.

In the late 1970s, or early '80s, Compass had enough requests to bring back the old 77B's, that they came out with the "77 Auto Legend" It had an adjustable tune speed. Unfortunately, it was a dog, as far as depth went. For some reason, even on the slowest speed, it had only 1/2 the depth of the original 77s. As far as what you say about the frequency not allowing the ability to tell the difference between high & low conductors, I don't think that would be a problem. The type of place people would be using this technology, would be places you'd be digging every conductor anyways. Like, in ghost towns, you don't pass up pull tabs for example :) Well next time you talk to George Payne, bug him some more for reasons why someone doesn't implement the old TR technology on a modern detector. With today's advances, they could bring it to a smoother deeper consistency.
