Actually, the first VLF was an early army land mine detector--- SCR-625--- about one kHz, was designed back in 1942. I briefly used one in basic ROTC training in 1953. HH Nininger used a surplus "625" successfully in finding meteorites.

The first civilian adaptations of VLF in early 1970's. The first successful civilian detector was the well known and classic White's Five-Supreme with its "terrain attenuator" and operated at about 1.75 kHz. Thank you George Paine for your engineering brilliance.
