Subject: Mark Gillard: answer to MXT performance question

Mark, I apologize for not seeing your earlier post to me. Regarding MXT performance on small nuggets: although the Relic mode is the best mode for coin and jewelry hunting, the Prospecting mode is still the best for finding small nuggets. With the MXT, with any of the motion discriminating modes, at a gain of 10, a 1 grain nugget air tests at 3 inches, however, as usual, in-ground tests are far less, dropping to an actual 1 inch deep into my Mojave Desert soil. (It is for this reason I always caution people about not getting overly excited about air tests). At a gain of 10, using the Prospecting mode, that same nugget can be detected fully 1.5 inches deep. Thus, as can be seen, the "traditional" all-metal prospecting mode outperforms the discrimination mode on small AU, in this case by a 50% depth increase. More thoughts on coin and relic hunting with the MXT: In the Relic mode, with the trigger in the center position, you get a two-tone accept/reject of all types of targets, depending on the discrimination setting. However, with the disc. setting at "0", the two-tone operation gives low tones for iron, and high tones for all non-ferrous targets. Flipping the trigger forward, you get standard motion discrimination performance. If one is uncertain about a particular target, watching the meter ID, and switching back and forth between modes, you can get a much better idea of whether you want to dig the target or not. The Relic mode is a "sleeper" mode; once more people try it, they will use it. Hope this helps; Hawkeye is out of state on family business, so my daily work load has been reduced to only 20 hours, so I might get to use the MXT at some promising sites! HH Jim
