Vance, I use the Sierra Max hooked up to my GM-3. The GM-3 ground-balance was expanded in range with other improvements making it no longer necessary to "tweek" the GM-3's single-knob fine ground-balance "pot" if a the gain (power) was changed.

Use the Sierra Max around the drywasher areas, go out on the slopes around the drywasher workings. Use the standard coil, or any accessory smaller coil, to hunt the header and tailings piles.

One good way is to first check the dig-hole for any signals; then slowly backfill the dirt into the hole as you check each "lift." By backfilling any dig-holes we are helping to keep areas open. The BLM is now becoming concerned about drywasher holes left open.

Back in the 1950's I drywashed in the Kamma and Trinity range near Lovelock, Nevada, with "Scotty the Assayer." Mr. Scott was an old-timer, first in the area in the 1920's, and as the town assayer had a wealth of knowledge. He was very secretive by nature and insisted we backfill and smooth out our holes before leaving the area. Actually it was fast and easy to re-run the header tailings back through the machine again and more gold was recovered on the second run.

Then we would spread the header pile out to blend in. If we returne to the same area a few weeks later it was difficult to recognize our earlier workings. Today, 45 years later, I can go back to these same areas and nuggetshoot. There is no evidence of any earlier drywashing activity and by back filling my small dig holes I also leave none.
