Jim I personally think your are right, well I think all the other posts on hot rocks are right too. There are so many different types weather + or -. To my way of thinking it still comes back to getting the most gold out of an area in the most efficient way with the tools at your disposal. I for one would rather search for those bigger deeper pieces and so tune to the + and dig up more hot rocks. If I tune - I loose the deepies. Hot rocks are a part of life here, since the SD's came on the market it has made life easier we still have to put up with some. One interesting thing that Ralph touched on was weather the rock was a fe based rock or or one that was mineral rich. I worked a place that was covered in what looked like smooth black ironstone, and every one sounded like a tin can ... they in fact were vanadium floaters, shed from what proved to be a big deposit that was later mined. Any way if some one has the definitive answer on hot rocks let me know and I will buy you a beer.
Matt
