Thanks for the reply Ralph.

I know I have to practise alot more using the iron reject feature. But the compass and strip of wood idea sounds like a simple and effective solution - I know it would have worked for the pieces of iron I've uncovered so far. I will definately be adding this technique to my hunting efforts.
