The smallest nugget I have on hand weighs in at .4 grains, and at a gain level of about 7 (due to inside 60 cycle interference), the X-5 will detect it on the bench at about 2.5 inches with a good repeatable (dig-able) signal in the discrimination mode. In all-metal mode it hits out to about 2 inches with a somewhat weaker signal response than in disc mode. Outside and away from any electrical interference I think it would do a little better as you could then run the gain at full throttle. You don't notice alot of range difference vs. gain level on larger targets, but it is a little more noticable on very small and faint target signals.
