Subject: Beginner Question

I am an absolute beginner, only what I have read is what I know. I have never done any prospecting at all. I have always wanted to be never knew where to start. I have a friend in a nearby state that lives near an abandoned gold mine from the 1800's. He has done a lot of dozer work and repair for the fellow and has full permission to do what ever he wants with the mine. He has invited me down to help him. Neither of us know anything about finding gold. I have been reading and researching all that I could find on finding gold. But book knowledge doesn't quite get it. I have been reading this forum for a long time and gatering information but now is the time to ask questions. I have several books on the subject and have noticed several writers of those books posting here. So here goes my questions. Where do I start? What do I look for in the tailings? where on the tailings do I look? What do I look for in the shaft? What are the danger signs to watch for in the shaft? If I use my minelab sovereign what should I look for in the tailing rocks? Would I be better off using an old white's gold master? I know if you find a hot rock it needs to be crushed and panned to get the gold any secrets to getting the rock crushed? Everyone that reads this please comment that way everyone can learn from it. Thanks in advance. HELP PLEASE
