Hi Reg,

I'm like you Reg... I really want to know "why". I did ask Dave Johnson via a post myself, but got a rather vague reply. He said that as far as he recalled the iron id on the GB2 is the same as on other units. And that was it.

The old 100 kHz TR units had the ability to more or less see through nails. Perhaps the GB2 71 kHz frequency lends it some of this ability.

I floated the idea to White's and Fisher of re-examining the old TR tech to see if it could be brought up to 21st century standards and yet retain that magic ability to see through iron, but got little interest.

Whatever it is, there is no doubt in my mind that there is something dramatically different in the way the GB2 identifies iron. A nugget sitting in the middle of a bunch of iron trash sounds off loud and clear. By far the least target masking I have experienced with a detector.

Supposedly the Shadow X-5 will do something similar?
