Subject: Hydrofluoric Acid - Warning!
In reply to: Jim McCulloch 's message, "New Formula: too cool!" on 19:09:27 03/26/02 Tue

Hi All,

Everything I ever read about hydrofluoric acid sounded bad. Since it has been mentioned here I thought some details worthwhile:

A burn over 2% of body surface, your hands say, by a 2% solution can be fatal. There is no official treatment for a hydrofluoric acid burn other then to flood the area. However hydrofluoric acid can penetrate skin very quickly, moving beyond a point where flooding the exposure will help. And a hydrofluoric burn does not always cause immediate pain, burn victims have reported not noticing for up to two hours.

Once in your body, hydrofluoric migrates to your bones. (It like calcium even more than it like glass.) It tends to reside there, continuing to damage body tissue.

It has a boiling point of 67 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning any part that gets free of solution on a normal summer day gets inhaled if someone is not wearing a respirator. The fumes are equally as dangerous as the liquid.

Most hydrofluoric acid is disappearing from the general market. It has been found to be very hazardous to health with possible delayed effects.
