Hi John,

I pushed one of the little Diablo uMax machines around for several years. It is (was) an excellent basic gold machine, and was designed for Tesoro by Dave Johnson, the same designer of the LST and Goldbug machines.

The "hot rock" feature is helpful in some situations, and is nothing more than a second ground balance mode for slightly shifting the "normal" ground balance to help identify positive hot rocks. Negative rocks take care of themselves with their signature "null-boing" response, as with most manual gold machines.

I think the biggest attributes of the uMax Diablo is in it's tiny and lightweight size, combined with it's super quiet circuitry.... probably one of the most stable of any manual gold machine ever designed.

While the Diablo uMax is basically an "extinct species" in the world of current production gold machines, you might get lucky enough to find one for sale on one of the classified forums. And as far as I know, Tesoro is still making the little 3x7 elliptical-concentric coil for the LST, which will work on the Diablo very well and is killer on tiny bits of gold.

I think you'll find the Diablo uMax is very similar in basic function to the original Gold Bug, and the original GB would be a close second choice to the Diablo.

Ralph
