Upon hearing this question, the angel at the gate smiled kindly. His answer humbled the man and answered his question as no other answer could have.
"You know, several people here have asked me that same question about you. If you're here, how could this be heaven?"
"All are here because the Master has forgiven all of us whether we earned that forgiveness or not. Your question was an easy one. You ought to hear the consternation, questions and complaints when Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics, Protestants and Wiccans discover each other here also."
Just then a bell tolled and all of the smiling, happy people there stopped what they were doing and the smiles all turned to looks of infinite sadness amd grief. A gloom seemed to come over the entire landscape and silent sobs could be heard among scattered groups of the populace.
"What's going on?" the man asked the welcoming angel. "Why are all of these people suddenly so sad and some are even crying?" he wanted to know.
With a smile as gentle as a baby's breath upon its mother's cheek, the angel answered him.
"We pause here each day so that all those who are here may mourn their friends and family who passed away and took the other gate. "
A special note from Laf:
My special thanks to Draggie and Sage for their kind comments on my story and its telling. A writer often wonders what readers think of his efforts and it is always good to get such comments... both good and bad. I am hoping to elicit more comments from this humble offering. We wordsmiths tend to be encouraged by the former and hope to grow from the latter.
I cannot claim full credit for this tale. It was inspired by an e-mail that Honey sent me quite a while back. I took what she sent and made it into mine, told my way. Now, Sage has forced me into making it fully mine.
As always, I fully expected to have Secretary Sage challenge me to finish my tale and address the questions I left unanswered in the original. Once again, she has cut straight through to the heart of a question one would expect in such a scenario. Thanks, hon. You make of me a better writer, a better thinker and a better man with that marvelous trait of yours and such challenging, thought provoking questions. If I forgot to tell you today...
