Subject: Father Dan

I owe Father Dan my deepest gratitude. During the summer, I asked the Lion if he would like me to call a priest. He said yes. The call went unmade for quite some time because he became sick once again and my time was spent getting the lion to and from hospitals and doctors. But one day in November, he said to me, "Are you ever going to call the priest?" I immediately called Father Dan. I left a message which he returned immediately. I told him a little about Laf and asked if he could come. Father Dan visited us that Sunday evening. He was mystified, bewildered, confused by many things he heard here at the hovel. And who could blame him? I believe he mentioned something about the devil having a hand in this situation, especially when I told him about the problems between Laf and his son. And why I was here with the lion. He would come to understand more in a very short time. Father Dan is a wonderful, intelligent human being and I must thank him for the effort he put into the Lion's funeral. I was able to get the Lion to Mass only once and Father Dan grinned from ear to ear when he saw me wheel him down the aisle. I could only imagine what he was thinking. "The Druid has arrived!" On the Wednesday evening before Laf died, I paced, frantic, thinking the lion would not survive that day. I called Father Dan and he came immediately to hear my own confession and then to see Laf. He called me into the room where I'd left them alone and said Laf was having problems breathing and needed me. He watched as I meted out the dose of liquid morphine in a spoonful of cranberry sauce. He helped me move the lion up in his hospital bed. The bed was too short for Laf's 6'4 1/2" and he kept slipping down and his feet hung uncomfortably over the foot of the bed. I left them alone again and Father Dan walked into the hallway, preparing to leave. Laf said something to him. I don't know what, but the smirk on Father Dan's face told me it was again a comment only the lion could make. Father Dan walked out and looked at me. He said, "You must be a saint." I wanted to laugh. I could only think, "Talk about the ultimate compliment!"

Father Dan only met with the lion 3 times, but he put together the most personal and beautiful funeral Mass and he watches over me now, calling me to check on me. I cannot thank him enough. I just wish they'd had a chance to get to know each other better.
