I will answer your question with a question:

explain to me how the Jews were supposed to follow each of the written laws of the Torah without an oral explanation?

Do you realize that the English translation of the Torah ("Old Testament") that you have was based on someone's *interpretation* of what the original Hebrew words meant? So when you (and others) read or follow the written Torah, you are following someone's *interpretation* of what the Hebrew words meant.

For example: when it says in the Torah that a Jew is to "bind the words" of the Torah and make them as "frontlets" between his eyes, the scribes and Pharisees *interpreted* that to mean tefillin, square boxes containing the words of the Torah, which religious Jews wear while they pray. This is but one of MANY examples of the original Hebrew being *interpreted*. The New Testament was also by necessity *interpreted* by someone as they translated it. This is why something is always changed when things are translated from one language to another.
