Adelaide's father was Edward Bowles Fripp, a soap and candle maker, who lived at Burfield Lodge, Bristol, England. He was visited, in 1836, by William "Good Billy" Fripp, a descendant of John Fripp, who settled in South Carolina about 1670 and had Fripp Island named after him.

The visit to his "cousin" is recorded in a booklet "Some Historic Families of South Carolina" by William's great-grandson, Frampton Errol Ellis. However, it does say that Edward was, at that time, mayor of Bristol. This is incorrect as it was Edward's 1st cousin, William Fripp (1785-1871) who was Mayor in 1836. When Good Billy returned to America he wrote to Edward with details of the South Carolina Fripp branches. The letter was returned, by Edward's daughter, after his death, with a miniature picture of Billy painted in London. I don't know which daughter sent the letter but it could have been Adelaide.

Attempts have been made to trace the letter and painting, which are thought to be amongst Frampton's large collection of research material, now held in Atlanta, Georgia. The records may also contain other details of William's visit to the UK; who and where he visited; why he visited (did he know his relationship to Edward and William?); who painted the miniature of William (the Fripp family of Bristol bore some esteemed artists). Other details of the voyage may also hold clues to link these two branches of the Fripp family.

Adelaide's father carried on the soap and candle business, possibly established by his grandfather, Samuel (1723-1794) or Samuel's father, Edward. It is hoped that an obituary, by the Moravian church, held at Bristol University could hold much information on Samuel Fripp and family. I hope to visit there when I can find the time.
