Businessman,

Here is some info provided by the ATO on the sunscreen issue:

The costs of sunscreen lotions, hats and sunglasses used by outdoor workers where the nature of their employment required them to work in an environment that exposed them to harmful rays of the sun and ultra violet radiation, are tax deductible.

Recognising that people may not have kept receipts for this year or past years, the Commissioner announced that he will accept a 'Reasonable Estimate' of up to $85 for that expenditure, as long as it is a reflection of an individual's expenses during the year.

This means that there are 2 ways to claim: using the Reasonable Estimate, or using actual expenses in the usual way.

People who work outdoors for short periods of the day or part year may have to claim a lesser amount than the 'Reasonable Estimate'.

If you also had work expenses for sun protection items for any of the past 4 years prior to 2002 and you want to make a claim for those expenses, up to the Reasonable Estimate of $85 per year, you can simply wrap up these expenses and claim that total amount on their 2002 income tax return.

This is a special process for the 2002 tax return only. For the next financial year people will need to substantiate their claims as usual.
