Subject: Adaptations

Hi,
I have a question concerning book adaptations. I started a screenplay back in college, mostly for my own pleasure, admiration for the book I chose to adapt, and for sheer learning experience. One question, is it even worth finishing in terms of a marketable screenplay if I don't have the rights to the adaptation to begin with? Or is this process a little more flexible, and sometimes the screenplay comes first, before the rights are bought? I just wondered if anyone would even look at it without the rights already belonging to me?
