Subject: PBS Documentary on MS

Hello from Ed King to CCHS class of 1954 and nearby years.

National PBS has a show that touches on Vicksburg and even has TWO members of the '54 class shown. I was a consultant and am shown in some ancient scenes and with current comment. Also in film but unnamedis the Rev. Colton Smith. The film touches V'burg with Miss MS pageant, The reigning Miss Mississippi, Jan Nave (I think that is right name) returns to McComb, "bombing center of the world." Her parents, Red and Malva Heffner, are members of the local Episcopal Church; Colton Smith is pastor. The Civil Rights Movement tried to communicate with local white church folk. The Heffners in their home had a conversation with two white volunteers, a student and a minister. Colton (in white clerical coller) is in the background with the Heffners who soon, fearing for their lives, had to flee the state forever.(I don't think any of the bombings inside V'urg and out in the country are shown. Most of you probably never knew of this year long reign of terror.)

I have worked on many documentaries; this is fine. Shown earlier, same series, was "1964-Year of Change." I was consultant and am in some old and new scenes; others in this film are the Beetles. The best play on Broadway (till 6/29) is Robert Schenkkan's "All the Way," (on LBJ in 1964)with some scenes about MS; I am even a minor character, along with the other Rev. King (my friend MLK) who is a major character. New Stage in Jackson will present this soon.
