Subject: Another Beautiful Mountain Range May Be Destroyed

The beautiful Saddleback Mountain Range is about to be bulldozed in Maine. I received this E-Mail from an avid Appalachian Trail Hiker and he tells me that even the trail is in danger of being lost in this area. Here is his E-Mail clipped in:

ATTN: Frequent Users - Trailplace Section Hikers Forum

Since January, the National Park Service has been in negotiations with the
owner of the Saddleback Ski Resort. NPS has been trying to purchase enough
land to provide a protected corridor and viewshed for the 3.5-mile section
of the Appalachian Trail across Saddleback Ridge that would retain the
natural features that make this section so spectacular. The resort owner
has resisted any settlement short of development of the ridge into a
full-scale ski resort, which would essentially destroy the Trail as a
hiking experience.

In recent weeks, backstage political maneuvering by the resort owner has
put the Park Service negotiators at great disadvantage. Political pressure
is being brought by the two Maine Senators to give the resort what it
wants, and a lawyer with reported influence with top Interior Department
decision makers has been hired to represent the resort and lobbying against
protection of the Trail. A recent news report on the negotiations, leaked
by a staffer in Maine Senator Snowe's office, showed that the interests of
the A.T. community are being ignored.

We can't let that happen. We are thus mounting a direct letter-writing
appeal to the Secretary of the Interior, asking him to ensure that the
result of any agreement reached by the Park Service affords full protection
to the Appalachian Trail. We need your help if we are to be heard. For
complete details about how you can help, see:

Please do so today. I believe we are very close to losing the A.T. on
Saddleback as a viable hiking experience!

Thank you for your help,

We tried to catch all double listings, but we had limited manpower and,
facing this deadline, a few no doubt got by us. If so, just use the extra
copy to forward to a friend who can help us save Saddleback.
