Subject: Thoughts on ther upcoming season and grades on the 49er roster

I believe the forty-niners are playoff bound this season although it would be a much better chance if Steve Young had not retired.However, I do believe they are in reasonable shape after his departure.They drafted a couple QB's and still have Jeff Garcia the only flaw i could see was in the Secondary.Not so kuch the Linebackers who i believe did a tremendous job given the circumstances.The finger of blame goes to the DB's and Safties.I believe they should've kept Murtin Hanks and Marcus Pope.They would have went to the playoffs if the would've had these two primetime players. Don't get me wrong the injuries of Steve Young and Garrison Hearst were all factors in the losing season.But, the the loss of those two contributors made the difference.Ok here's how i grade the roster.
QB=B it will be an A- if Jeff Garcia can orchestrate the offense like he did in the final five games.
RB=B+ An A+ plus as soon as Hearst gets the green light.
FB=A+ Fred Beasly is the fullback of the future for SF.
WR=B It will go to an A if Streets,Owens,and Stokes follow Rice's lead.
TE= C+ It will go to a B if Gregg Clark can stay healthy.
OL= C+ They will also go to a be as soon as they get comftorable with Garcia's style.
DL=B- They can emerge to an A- if they bring back Roy Barker or a rookie plays well.
Secondary=C- They can get to at least a B+ if they can develop McQuarters,Bronson,Shulters,and especially Mcdonald (Ramos that is).
SPT=A+ They are an excellent unit and will even better this year.
