I see two reasons to have a big house. The first is to fill it up with people. You fill it up with a big family or alot of guests, or a combination of both. That is what makes a house a home. I have always been under the impression that people like Joseph Smith and Joseph Smith III had a lot of guests, probably on church business.
The second reason for having a big house is to have lots of places to put your expensive treasures and to show off to the neighbors.
I would hope that any church officials would have big houses for the first reason.
