We know more about sending men to mars now, than we did about sending men to the moon in 1969, however there is simply no funding available for a mission to mars. Any president is unlikely to commit to a project that will out last his time in office, as it could be used as a scape-goat by the next president, and attacked at election time if no results have been seen. Many people at NASA are focused on building the international space station so a mission to mars is currently low priority.
There are also time restrictions. Earth and Mars are only in suitable orbital positions every two years, so a mission must be planned years in advance to get everything finished on time.

A mission to mars would be hugely expensive. A new method of space travel would have to be developed (The shuttle would not be suitable) to sustain life for such a long period of time. Food and exercise on the mission would have to be considered.

When we spoke to the scientists and astronauts at NASA there were mixed feelings about weather or not we could get to mars with our current technology, however many thought that in 20 years we would see the first person walk on the surface.
