re posted so all the ingredients amount shows:
The first published “brownie” recipe in America.
1896 by Fannie Farmer
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup melted butter
1 egg, unbeaten
2 squares unsweetened
chocolate, melted
(a square was equal to 1 oz)
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup chopped nuts

Mix ingredients in order given. Bake in round cake pan lined with parchment paper.
Bake 325 degrees for 25 minutes or until pick inserted in center comes out clean.

I have made these for potlucks and bake sales. They are delicious. I bake in a small cast iron skillet. I haven't tried doubling the recipe, just make separate batches.

THis makes excellent Brownie Brittle. Spread VERY thin on parchment paper and bake 350 for 10 min. then at 250 until crisp. Add 1/4 vodka to batter to make the brittle crisp. The vodka will bake off in the 350 ten minutes.
