Subject: Info & Help Regarding Breeders and Experiences

First, let me preface this by requesting that all replies be emailed to me so as not to violate any board policies. I also don't want anyone promoting or "bashing" anyone else publicly. Second, let me apologize to any of you who frequent multiple boards, as I'm posting this in a few places to get as broad a response as possible. Now, on to the topic...

Let me start by telling you what I'm about. I've been researching obtaining a Corso as a pet for some time now, almost a year to be specific. I've been searching for the right dog to compliment my family for almost two years and have made my mind up with regards the Corso. It's the dog for us. By us I mean my wife and myself, right now. There will be a couple other added in the next few years though...

Anyway, I've been reading everything I can get my hands on and have just recently found many of these BB's and I see some of the same nic's popping up on several boards. Most of the things I've read are no-brainers, pick a reputable breeder, visit the home, meet both the sire and dam, ask lots of questions, etc., etc. So, I guess the gist of my post is this, what, if any, are your opinions of the Corso breeders out there? I know that's an extremely broad and general question, but I'm finding conflicting information in my search.

Let me explain. I met and talked with several people at a rare breed show near my home and they were all members of the ICCF (names withheld). All were breeders, to one degree or another, and all recommended one another as "reputable breeders". Some things that concern are these, one breeders said to avoid breeders that do not have both parents on site, and one of these imports seamen from Italy. Another said be wary of any breeders that advertise, and one of these has an add in Dog Fancy and the annual '03 Dog Magazine (title escapes me). I have to say, all of the people I've spoken to in person, on the phone and through email, have gone above and beyond in helping me in my quest. So, if you're reading this, you know who you are and I thank you so much. And, please don't take this query the wrong way, finding the right puppy is SO important to me I have to gather as much information as I can.

The reason I'm asking these questions is two fold. First, none of the breeders that I found and feel comfortable with have puppies available. They're also not planning any litters in the upcoming year, and I wasn't able to commit to the recent ones. Secondly, I was relying solely on the fact that they were all members of the ICCF. Come to find out, and this was my own ignorance, that the ICCF is not a governed agency, merely a group of dedicated Corso enthusiasts. Also, I discovered that all the people I was talking to and relying on for information are affiliated with the ICCF, on a level greater than just members. So, my concern was that they were only recommending breeders in their "circle". To be honest, that's perfectly fine, because their reputation is on the line and you should only recommend a breeder who you're completely confident in.

I was also swayed to ask these questions in light of all the back and forth talk regarding a breeder and some of his puppies. I've read it all and I'm not interested in hearing anyone's opinions on that, unless you're directly involved with either parties. So to wrap up a long winded post, I'm looking for your personal experiences, recommendations, who to talk to, who to avoid, and so on.

Thanks for reading this whole thing,

Josh Dunning
