Dance of the lion, year of the snake
Shaking, prancing
glancing sideways at rival
the proud golden unicorn.
Both are invited
shaking heads, quivering tails.
glancing warily.
Flashes of colour
prancing in all their glory
ribboned gifts to seek.
Golden unicorn
takes her chances, leaps up high
to reach the window.
Shaking and dancing
weaving in and out of streets
stamping and prancing.
The proud ancient lion
the elegant unicorn
so steeped in history.
Bang, bang, smoke around
firecrackers anticipate
arrival of pair.
A plume of grey smoke
the lion rises above it
like a gold phoenix.
Shaking and teasing
screams of delight and laughter
which way to go next?
The children follow
the joyful procession
in 2-0-0-1.
Flags blowing gaily
red and green in the cool breeze
with coloured streamers.
The new gate welcomes
all who come to celebrate
The Year of the Snake.
