Doorways

Shoppers rush on by in fevered frenzy
looking through many dressed windows
temptingly bright and inviting us in to buy
unnecessary luxuries, additional presents
after all, the sales come but twice a year.

Warm boots protect our feet from snow
well wrapped up from harsh winter chill.
Cosy Italian restaurant temptingly invites
despite days of over-eating we agree
hungrily devour the menu’s treasures
clink glasses, warm up by open fire.
Laughingly tip generously on way out
laden with our bags of extra presents
almost overlook the beggar’s cry for help.

Nestled between designer shop windows
a narrow doorway carpeted with snow
a young girl, bedraggled, dishevelled
competes for attention from shoppers.
They walk past quickly not hesitating
more shops to see, more luxuries to buy
who needs to be reminded of humanity.

My daughter stops, not quite nine
returns, wishes the girl a Happy Christmas
empties her purse of Christmas gift money.
The bedraggled girl’s eyes shone with joy
mine too with pride, but also with shame
why did I not also take her home with me?
