 Little acquaintance with the world, modern or ancient, is required to convince one that love of country is a powerful force in human affairs.

In order to understand its strength it is only necessary to recall the passion that can instantly be evoked by an insult to national honour or, still more decisely, the sacrifices of life and material possessions that whole populations accept in time of war in order to triumph over their rivals.

When crisis comes and peril threatens patriotism is liable to sweep through a people with extraordinary emotional appeal, releasing enthusiasm and energy and eliminating selfishness more than almost any other influence can do.
