Author: Susan & Laura
Subject: Breezing Star and B-man

Laura led Star Performance to the barn and groomed her shining chestnut coat. Laying the light racing saddle on the filly’s back, Laura sighed happily. She loved the feel of the wind whipping in your face as you raced along the track atop a powerful TB. Star snorted uneasily as she felt the girth being tightened. She accepted the bit easily and Laura slipped the bridle onto the filly’s delicate face. Laura smiled with anticipation and walked out to the track. Her mom was warming up B-man, her TB colt. Laura received a leg up and smiled as Star danced beneath her. “Easy, girl.” Laura cooed gently, sitting deep in the playful filly’s saddle. They warmed up at a jog, moving smoothly around the track. After a 10 minute jog, Star was raring to go. She loaded easily into the gate and then tossed her mane impatiently, ready to go. The gates flew open and Star shot out. After about 6 strides, she slowed into a steadier gait. Laura urged her forward but Star was content to run at this pace. “C’mon girl!” Laura pleaded as she continued to urge the filly forward. Finally, Laura gave a light tug on the reins and Star slowed to a jog. Laura rode over to where her mom was loading B-man into the gate. “Mom? Can we breeze these two together? Star wouldn’t run without competition.” The 17 y/o asked hopefully. “Sure, sweetie. Just load her and then we’ll see how they go for this 8 furlong breeze. It will be strenous.” Susan replied as she calmed a prancing B-man. After Star was loaded, Laura crouched over her withers, anticipating the break. The gates burst open and B-man exploded out under Susan’s expert guidance. Star snorted in surprise and charged alongside his withers, slowly gaining on the big colt. Susan was urging B-man forward and he was flying up the stretch. Star was clocking an awesome time, too, as the horses galloped neck in neck. It was B-man by a neck at the mile marker. Susan slowed the colt and said, “That was a good time. Star is really competitive and she’s got the speed to go far.” Susan dismounted and led B-man to the barn. Laura grinned and hugged her filly’s neck. She swung out of the saddle and led her to the barn. After untacking, she let the filly graze before putting her in the roomy box stall.
