Subject: Working with Poppy, Fury and Sea Breeze!

Susan stepped into the racing barn and smiled. This evening was quiet here at the track. Only the gentle whickers and snorts of horses filled the quiet. Walking to one of the stalls, she looked in. Poppy, Helen's racehorse, nickered and stuck her head out to greet her. Susan sighed. She felt out of place here without a racehorse of her own, especially after Chance's accident. Pushing these thoughts out of her mind, Susan clipped a lead rope to Poppy's halter and smiled. The filly danced about playfully as Susan hooked her in crossties. After grooming and tacking the filly up, Susan led Poppy outside and swung into the small racing saddle. Poppy pranced playfully about and started at an easy warm up jog around the track. After limbering the filly up, Susan walked her into the starting gate. They were going to breeze 5 furlongs. The gates burst open and Poppy exploded out like a bullet. She flew around the turn, snorting with pleasure and racing like the wind. Susan pulled her up after 5 furlongs and grinned with pleasure. The dark bay filly hadn't worked up a sweat at all and was cantering energetically down the track. Susan squeezed and Poppy flew forward, pleased she got to run again. After 3 more furlongs, they had breezed a full mile in superb time. Susan patted the filly's sleek coat and grinned. She slid off and led Poppy into the barn. After untacking and cooling her out, Susan gave her a nice massage before putting her in her stall. Then she headed over to Fury's stall. Katie, his owner, walked into the barn, right in time for Fury's training session. The mean colt snapped his teeth at Susan violently. She dodged and clipped the lead rope to his halter, staying out of reach of his teeth. Leading him into the aisle, Susan clipped him in crossties. She picked up a dandy brush and groomed his shiny coat. She loved training Fury and had grown attached to him, but she did wish he wasn't so mean sometimes. Katie kept a close eye on him as Susan tightened the girth. Fury snapped violently at her arm and Susan grimaced in frustration. After a long ordeal, the colt was finally ready to be ridden. Katie boosted Susan into the saddle and gasped when Fury took off like a bucking bronco. Sitting deep and holding steady contact, Susan sat it out and waited for him to get tired of this game. He slowed to a jog and we started around the track, but not at a leisurely pace. He pulled at the reins, wanting to run. Susan held steady with the reins and pushed him into the starting gate. He nipped at her leg while they were in the box but stayed ready because he knew they were about to run. The gates flew open and Fury shot out, his smooth, long stride eating up the track. They raced around the first turn and kept speeding faster and faster. Fury hardly seemed like the same horse. Now he wnated to run and he was fine tuned to your every movement, as if he could read your mind. Susan let him breeze 8 furlongs before she pulled him to a canter. Her hair flew out behind her and she laughed from the sheer pleasure she had gotten from Fury's speed. She slowed him down and dismounted. As she hit the ground, he whirled around and chomped onto her arm. Susan gasped and led him to the side of the track. Katie stared at the stopwatch again and said, "He did it 2 seconds better than his last time with breezed him a mile! Another black letter workout!" Susan grinned and excitedly patted Fury's neck. He whirled around and glared threateningly at her. Susan smiled and they took him to the barn. After a nice bath, he was put in his stall for the night. Sea Breeze whinnied unhappily and looked out his stall door. Katie laughed and walked over to him. She patted him gently and led him out of his stall and into the barn aisle. After grooming and tacking Breeze up, Susan gave Katie a leg up into the saddle. "Today, I think we'll have him do at leasts a 4 furlong breeze and if he still wants to go take him for two more furlongs. Warm him up and then load him into the starting gate." Susan said. Katie nodded and started jogging him around the track. He moved smoothly around and listened to Katies every littlt signal. After a complete warm up, Breeze moved into the starting gate easily, acting like a pro. Ching! The gates exploded open and Breeze burst out. Katie crouched over his withers and urged him on. After the 4 furlongs, Susan noted that the gray colt was still raring to go. Katie took him the last two furlongs before pulling him up. She was grinning happily and she let Breeze canter another furlong before she headed over to the rail. "Great! He had an excellent time!" Susan said, pleased with Breeze. She patted him gently and he nuzzled her shoulder. Katie and Susan untacked Breeze and put him in his stall. Then they talked for a while and worked out this training schedule for Fury and Breeze's next few workouts:

Fury: breeze 6 furlongs, slow gallop 2 furlongs
Sea Breeze: condition heart & lungs by cantering up and down hills

Fury: Breeze 7 furlongs, slow gallop 1
Sea Breeze: breeze 5 furlongs, slow gallop 3

Fury: breeze 8 furlongs
Sea Breeze: breeze 6 furlongs, slow gallop 2

After reviewing the schedule one last time, both women headed home:)
