Subject: Working Hawk, Affair, Spoiled, Weapon, Fury, Breeze, Star, and Best!

Susan walked through the racing barn and slid open one of the stall doors. Lady Hawk nickered to her and nuzzled her rider. Susan groomed and tacked the mare up. She warmed her up on the track, sponging the reins to keep Hawk to a steady pace. The filly was willing and gentle, listening to every slight signal. Susan loaded Hawk into the gate and much to her surprise the filly reared wildly. She calmed her down and tried again. This time, Hawk pranced nervously in. Susan patted the filly’s withers and settled into her jockey’s crouch. The gates burst open and Hawk flew out like she had wings. Her gallop was smooth, fast, and light, like a bird fluttering on the breeze. Susan guided the filly around the turn and they headed down the stretch. 5 furlongs, 6 furlongs, 7 furlongs, 8 furlongs! Hawk had easily galloped her mile and was prepped for any races coming up. Susan dismounted and took the filly into the barn. She untacked Hawk and hosed her off. Then she got Spoiled Rotten. The colt danced arrogantly about as she tacked him up. She led him to the trail behind the barn and swung into the saddle. He pranced beneath her as he walked. After jogging him for a about half a mile, Susan cantered him smoothly over the hilly trail. Spoiled moved steadily forward, not pulling for rein but wanting to go faster. We did half a mile of conditioning up and down hills before we headed back at a jog. Back at the barn, Spoiled was untacked and put in his stall. Susan clipped a lead shank to Secret Weapon’s halter and loaded him into her trailer. Mike, who had been watching her ride, did the same with Grand Affairs. Susan drove them for about 20 minutes before they turned onto the beach. She parked the trailer and unloaded Weapon. She tacked the colt up and swung into the tall TB’s saddle. Mike adjusted his stirrups and then vaulted into Affair’s saddle. Susan guided Weapon along the beach and Mike struggled to keep Affair to a walk. After warming the colts up, Susan began jogging and cantering Weapon in the salt water. He frisked about, thoroughly enjoying himself. After a while of working him on the sand and getting Weapon’s leg in the salt water, Susan dismounted and Mike did the same. Susan was going to work Affair in the same way. Affair wanted to gallop, but Susan settled into the saddle and pushed him through their workout. After driving the TBs back to the barn and getting them put away, Susan walked over to Breeze’s stall. Katie’s colt nuzzled her affectionetely. She lead him into the barn aisle and began to brush his glossy gray coat. After tacking him up, Susan looked at the barn clock. 7:30 a.m., Katie would be there any moment. Suddenly, Katie ran into the barn. “Sorry, I’m late. Thanks for tacking him up.” The woman said. Susan nodded and handed Breeze’s reins to Katie. She quickly walked over and tacked up her racehorse, Best Bet. The two women took their horses onto the track. Once Breeze saw the track and felt Katie’s weight drop onto his back he knew it was time to run! He pawed eagerly at the ground, but stood in one place. “This time we are going to condition him up and down hills on the trail behind the barn. Okay?” Susan said. Katie smiled and patted Breeze’s withers. They jogged for about 10 minutes of trail before Susan gave the signal to canter. Best and Breeze cantered smoothly up and down hills, matching strides. Susan noted that Breeze was moving nicely and the hills were putting no strain on him. Best was moving powerfully along. After a mile of cantering, Susan and Katie turned their TBs around and they started back at a jog. Best slowed at the barn and Breeze tossed his head playful as he walked. Katie and Susan dismounted and took care of their horses in the barn. “Breeze was moving nicely. He should be ready for any races you want to enter him in.” Susan remarked as she walked toward Fury’s stall. She dodged the colt’s snapping teeth and clipped a lead shank onto him. Hooking him in crossties, Susan tacked him up and handed his reins to Katie. Boosting the other woman into the saddle, Susan kept a firm hold on
Fury until Katie was settled. Fury took off in a series of bucks as soon as Susan let go. Katie sat it out, sitting lightly in the saddle. After warming up, Fury was ready to go. Katie slowed galloped him 2 furlongs, settled into her jockey’s crouch. Hair flying our behind her, Katie urged Fury forward. He exploded forward. Racing over the ground with incredible speed. Katie let him out 6 furlongs before she stood in her stirrups and gently tugged the reins. Fury dropped to a canter and bucked a few times. Katie guided him to the rail and said, “I know that was his best time yet for 6 furlongs.” Susan nodded and said, “You can get him put away, right?” Katie nodded and Susan went to Star’s stall. Christina’s colt tossed his head and snorted playfully. Susan stroked his soft nose and led him into the barn aisle. She tacked him up and walked out to the track. Star snorted as she vaulted into the saddle. Susan gathered the reins smoothly and started to jog Star around the track. After a thorough warm up, Susan loaded Star into the gate. He jogged in like a pro and flew out when the gates opened. Susan crouched over his withers and urged him on. They dashed through Star’s 8 furlong breeze and Susan pulled him up. She dismounted and led him to the barn, where she gave him a good rub down and lots of attention. Half an hour later, Susan drove home, trailer in tow.
