Hi Nancy -

All squirrels hoard food - hence the saying "He/She squirrels-away his/her money for a rainy day". Some species "scatter hoard" and some species "larder hoard". Flyers (in the wild) are scatter-hoarders by instinct. They will stash their booty in any nook or cranny they can find, most often in the trees but they will also bury hard nuts in the ground not far from the relative safety of a tree trunk. North American red squirrels, in the wild, are renowned larder-hoarders. Their stashes of cone crop can be enormous, some in the order of ten square meters!

Each method has its good and bad points. Scatter hoarders will not find a great percentage of what they stashed, but by scattering their finds, they do not run the risk that larder-hoarders must deal with, that of having one central food location found-out by competitors and then be robbed blind!
