Subject: 100% cotton balls (not to be confused with 'cosmetic puffs') ...
In reply to: Agnes 's message, "Re: "Helens Little Critters"." on 11:29:39 03/02/07 Fri

(100% cotton balls (not to be confused with 'cosmetic puffs') ...) have always been my flyers bedding of choice, too. While I've never seen any of my flyers' pups get 'threads' of cotton wrapped anywhere, I have seen that 'cosmetic puffs' can create threads that are very resistant to seperation or 'breaking', and thus create a danger. 'Cosmetic puffs' are polyester, not cotton -- and that is why they create tough 'threads'. The 100% cotton always shreads down into small 'pills' of material, very comfortable for the flyers. That's not to say one can't bed on paper -- flyers will shread toilet tissue into reasonably confortable bedding -- but given the choice, my flyers do use the cotton balls.

As to the seeds, I usually leave the appple and pear cores for my bunny, Ahab -- who's now in his ninth year, and doing just fine -- but like Dennis, I've seen that given the choice, my flyers eat apple pips with no trouble. I've eaten my share, myself, and I'm still here, too. Of course, in my case (as is true with many other critters), I didn't masticate the pips, and they thus pass through one's digestive tract intact. Flyers do eat the pip's 'insides' when they get them -- pear pips, too. And yet, they seem to be uneffected. But, no need to take a chance. Apples and pears are pretty easy to cut up into pieces containing no pips -- so err on the side of caution, I say.
