(I rarely give corn ... it's very fattening. It's what they use ...) to fatten cattle and other 'meat' livestock. Plus, if the corn is 'dry' (like that used for feeding chickens, or mixed in wild bird feed ....), it's suseptible to many different molds. I once asked a vet if I couldn't help my lanky 17h. TB gelding, Mr. L, to gain weight, by adding whole or cracked corn to his grain. The vet was the one who advised me about the mold problem, with corn, and said it took an expert eye to actually be able to tell if the corn was moldy. Evidently, for cattle and chickens, it's not that much of a problem -- but cattle have much different digestive tracts than horses (or humans or squirrels ... lol!), so perhaps they're better able to 'filter' out any toxins from the mold. I think if you eliminate the corn and peas, it should help a good bit.

Anyway, I do know how you feel! I give sugar-snap peas, mostly, because they seem to be mostly 'pod', rather than 'pea' (it's the pea that has most the starch and carbohydrates, I believe ...), along with broccoli. I do give apples and pears, and blueberries, too -- and strawberries. And mushrooms. My guys never, ever use a wheel, although they do have one. They have two 'active' periods, at night, when they do quite a bit of running and climbing (I have blankets and woven cloth pinned on the walls, so they have plenty of traction). But Mike Robe and Iota are still 'chubbies', while the others are slimmer.
