Not me. I ride each week at a lesson barn and trail ride when I can. Such as yesterday which was a great day!
>I have read here about someone that has horses........who is that?

My barn has several excellent horses in their late 20's early 30's that are great "teachers" and are ridden almost every day but they do require management of their feed, feet, teeth, and general health.

It totally depends on the horse's soundness and what you plan to do with it. Most 21 year olds would be fine with pleasure riding for 1 to 3 hours at a walk/trot with a considerate rider almost every day. However barrel racing or jumping in competition each weekend might do them in quickly. Hard work and then several days without exercise are bad for them.

The real question is, is this the right horse for you at this time?
You will need a thorough check by a good vet. It won’t be cheap.
Be sure to ask for an assment of exactly what s/he thinks the horse will be capable of.
There lots of resources available both in print and on the net.
You might also consider checking out all of the barns in your area to see if there is a lesson barn that might be a better choice for you.

. >..I had been thinking of getting my own horse, and recently an opportunity came up to get one for free.....it is 21 years old....I know that is near the end of their life span, isnt it? The horse that I rode for my lessons was also 21,and I could see that frequently he just wasnt up to being ridden, but his owner said it was good for him, kept his joints lubricated...but what about the added weight of ME on his back? >
