Subject: Twist ties work just fine, to attach a sheet to the inside ....
In reply to: Linda 's message, "Re: Cages? We don't need no steen-king cages!!!" on 10:07:06 11/04/06 Sat

(Twist ties work just fine, to attach a sheet to the inside ....) of a cage -- or, you can also just tear the sheet corners to make two 'strips' of fabric, then use them to act as ties, threading the strips through the cage wires, and tying them on the outside of the cage.

I have a walk-in closet for my boys, about 4' x 6'. It has a 'U' shaped upper shelf, and three nest boxes (one on the middle of the U, on the top, and one on each side of the U, hung from the shelf supports, below. These side boxes have their own attached 'porch', under the box opening). Along the three walls, I attached cup hooks under the shelf level. At Wallyworld, I bought a cheap (a buck a yard)remnant of a crinkle-cotton cloth, 54" wide, and about 8 yards, or so. I hung this cloth like a drape, around the closet walls, giving the boys something upon which they can easily climb.

I figured it would be easily washed, if the boys used it to pee -- but my boys pee along the back shelf, topside, which I line with white paper towel. I change the paper once a week (more, in the Autumn, when they have acorns ...), and that seems to be enough. They also mostly use the back shelf for droppings, too. They will also poo along the den's window sill -- but it vacuums up easily enough. They're rarely closed into the closet, except when I'm in 'full cleaning' mode, and working on the den, and have the den door to the hall open.

Sheets hung along walls, like drapes, give flyers plenty of fun places to play. If you can buy a cheap cloth hanging shoe-bag, they love those, too, and they can be hung from a wall.

When I started these wall hangings, it was mostly for pups. I was always concerned that if a pup wound up on the floor, it would be difficult for them to gain access to the high nest boxes. Arranging something that extended from the floor to the nest box level was the reason I began with the cloth 'drapes' -- and it's worked quite well!

SOME day, I'm going to get the aviary built I want for my crew -- but for now, the interior aviaries have to do ... sigh.
