People usually take for granted that only girls and women have pelvic exams, and that pelvic exams never occur before late teens.

The reality is very different. I guess that at least 50% of young people of both sexes have a pelvic exam before the age of 12, and those not having will usually have it during the early teens.

These exams occur at doctoroffices, health centers, hospitals, special establishments made for these exams and also in schools, kindegarten and summer camps.

Countries where I know this occurs in certain communities or school are USA, UK, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Brazil and Russia, but there are certain others too.

With pelvic exam, I here means examinations where the urethra, bladder, vagina or anus is probed and inspected with inserted instruments.

But it is never spoken about. Even doctors pretend that it does not occur, and those knowing they had one at an early time are reluctant to talk about it.

Many does not know that they had a pelvic exam as a child, because it occured under heavy sedation or general anesthesia. They only remember they were put to sleep for some exam, and sometimes thet remember waking up with symptoms or technical arrangemnets in their pelvic zones, like catheters or the like.

Sometimes the anesthesia is given ny injections pretended to be something different, sometimes by something to swallow pretended to be some other thing, the kid falls in sleep and wake up some time after in a confused state.

But even if they wake up and make such observations, and remember them, the anesthesia often have aftereffects that make them not thinking about the things they remember. They know about the observations and can recall it from memory, but they go for years without reflecting about them

Often these pelvic exams occur when they a child is under anesthesia or some other procedures, like tonsil surgery, dental work of eartube placement. If the time under anesthesia for such ordeals is unexpectedly long, the most probable explanation is that the child also underwent a pelvic exam.

In some communities all girls have a mandatory pelvic exam in early childhood, or early teenhood. In equally many communities this happens for boys, And in many communities it happens for both girls and boys. But it is often shielded by use of anesthesia an not spoken much about. A curious fact is that some communities find it more important to examine boys this way, while others find girls to have most need for these exams.

These more or less secret exams has a long history, but they are getting steadily more common and comprehensive due to new technological possibilities and a stedily greater eagerness of authorities to controle children in all ways.

Myself, I grew up in a part of Norway where at least many boys and girls had a couple of such exams at the age of 5-12.

Extended mandatory well-child examination under anesthesia:

In certain areas the health authorities has begun to subject children and teens to extended well-child physicals where one performs several or all of the following procedures: inspections with optical scopes through all or several body openings,ultrasound examinations of most body structures, x-ray taking of joints, EEG and EKG. The kid is often given sedation or even general anesthesia during these extended physicals to make the kid cooperative and to hinder him or her from remembering. Still the kid will remember a lot of details around the procedures and sometimes also from the procedures themselves, because anesthesia never works perfectly, and the kid will always have some symptoms afterwards that tell a lot of what has been done. This poll has the aim of investigating experiences from such ordeals.

Poll about cystoscopy:

By cystoscopy the doctor looks into your bladder with a long instrument. This instrument can be rigid like a stick or flexible. All age groups have cystoscopies. In some comunities a cystoscopy seem to be a mandatory exam at some ages of children and teens. These communities are probably not many yet, but this type of exam seem to increase in frequency, both for special purposes and for mandatory or recomended screening. This poll has the purpose of establishing a picture of the frequence of this type of exam in different age groups and the arrangements during the exam.
