Spiral Bound @ The Tap n Spile
w/ Slider and Calvoon
21/12/02

We arrived during Slider’s set to what was a disappointingly medium-sized but seemingly jubilant crowd at the Tap n Spile. Having missed ‘The Spiral’s’ last few gigs, Pete informed me they had a couple of new songs that were sounding good, and he was fairly pleased with them. And pleased he should be if the instrumental opener, ‘The Keep’ is anything to go by. Apparently inspired by the Newcastle Keep (hmm…) this song sounded particularly professional and there was an air of confidence about the band whilst playing it. Pete then joined everyone on stage for their second new song, ‘Shyne’ and everyone’s attention was now firmly fixed on the band. During ‘Shyne’ I heard one onlooker say, “Shyne did exactly that. Diamonds and Silver fell from its gaping head. It was a supernova of a song.” Maybe he’d had a few too many? The next two tunes also seemed to be going well until ‘For Your Eyes Only’ encountered some ‘technical hitches’. Anyone who’s seen a Spiral’s gig will know that complications are a common occurrence and Pete’s quite proficient in dealing with them now. Half way through a technically flawed ‘For Your Eyes Only’, Pete’s exasperation became apparent: “STOP!!!! Sorry about that – it usually sounds better than that….” and swiftly onto the next song. After pulling themselves together for ‘Tara Patrick’, the highlight of the night came in the form of Roses-inspired ‘Shadows’. The song went smoothly and had the crowd jumping and swinging from the stairs again. Pob also showed his appreciation by body popping along the floor. Next up, another crowd pleaser, and without doubt one of Spiral Bound’s best songs, ‘Call it Out Again’, which paved the way for the final song of the night, ‘Tona’s Trip Out’. Every time I see the band they have improved since their last performance. Watch out for great improvements in 2003.
