Panting for breath, Gobblecraw resisted the urge to lean against the tree to which he had his back. The froglocks, four of whom lay dead before him , had pulled back. He knew the respite was temporary though and could he could not afford to show any weakness, no matter how weak he might be. He bled from a score of wounds, many of them deep and serious and he knew he could not stand against the rush that was surely coming but was determined to sell his life as dearly as possible.

Just a few scant minutes ago (could it truly have been but minutes?) Gobblecraw had been hunting in the Innothule Swamp when he came across a froggie apparently all by itself. Being a Shadow Knight in his 5th season, a lone froggie was an easy kill and the temptation to rid the swamp of yet another member of the troll’s hereditary enemies was too much for the young knight to pass up. Breaking from cover, Gobblecraw rushed his unsuspecting foe. The froggie turned, obviously quite surprised that something the size of a troll had managed to sneak-up on it. It opened it’s mouth to cry for help just as Gobblecraw’s rusty two-handed battle-ax came whistling for it’s head….and missed. The froggie croaked out it’s call. Another froggie and a froggie fisherman, neither of which Gobblecraw had seen, sprang to their brother’s aid and what had seemed an easy kill but moments before, suddenly became a fight for his life. Calling upon his god, Cazic Thule, he turned from the first froglock and struck the fisherman a terrific blow. He watched with undisguised pleasure as his lord filled the fisherman’s brain with images of terror such as no mortal could ever dream and wracked his body with but small tastes of what those images were capable of. While the froggie stood there, staring frozen into the depths of madness, Gobblecraw’s back-handed swing severed the froggie’s head from his shoulders and sent his soul screaming into those depths forever. Gobblecraw had no time to savor his kill though, for even as his ax dispatched the mightiest of his foes, another had leapt under his swing to deliver a cut to his thigh while the other slashed his sword arm as he had struck. Gobblecraw recovered quickly and struck the first froglock an overhand blow. The blow, mighty though it was, was poorly aimed and struck the froggie but a glancing blow to the head. The froggie turned and ran. Gobblecraw began to pursue but as he turned to give chase the other delivered a series of stinging cuts to Gobblecraw’s unguarded back and thighs, forcing him to turn around and deal with it. In short order, Gobblecraw dispatched his enemy but even as he turned to make his way back to the safety of Grobb, the injured froggie returned with no less than five of his comrades in tow. Briefly, Gobblecraw considered making a run for it, but he knew he would never make it so instead he turned, hefted his ax and met their charge. Quickly he finished off the wounded froglock and hewed at another but for every blow he delivered his opponents delivered ten and he was slowly forced back until he found himself with his back to a large tree. His world dissolved into a blur of whirling steel, blood and pain. After what seemed an endless eternity, the froggies suddenly pulled back leaving Gobblecraw in his current situation, bleeding, nearly exhausted with only a tree to guard his back. He looked down and realized that at some point in the melee he had managed to kill another froglock and saw that two others were fleeing the battle. He looked up and realized that despite this, he yet faced five froggies meaning others must have joined the battle and no doubt the wounded would return with more re-enforcements. The situation was completely hopeless. In his current condition Gobblecraw doubted he could take even one more froglock out but he was determined to try. With the realization of his certain death a strange calmness descended upon him and strength returned to his limbs. It was with a wild grin and loud roar that he met the frogs charge and another head split on Gobblecraw’s gore-splattered ax. More cuts and lacerations were inflicted upon his already battered form but he felt them only distantly, as if they were happening to someone else’s body. His vision began to fade in and out, in time with the beating of his heart which had become unnaturally loud in his ears. Through his dimming vision, Gobblecraw saw an unbelievable sight. Through the swamp came another troll, armed to the teeth and armored like a gnomish battle wagon. The froggies, intent upon their nearly vanquished foe, appeared not to hear the charging giant and Gobblecraw decided it must be a false hope sent to him by his god. He worshiped Cazic Thule, god of fear and terror and it would be just like him to send a false hope for terror is so much greater when it comes upon the heals of crushed hope. But when the charging juggernaut reached the line of froggies, his first swing decapitated the nearest frog and his second cleaved another in twain. Before the frogs could even turn to get a glimpse of their doom, they were all dead. A moment later, when the froglock re-enforcements arrived, the all died in similar ways, with a single swipe from the massive troll’s swords. When the fighting was finally done with and it was apparent that no further froggies would be showing up, the might warrior turned to Gobblecraw and said “You o.k.? Need sit?” The question, and it’s implication of weakness, angered Gobblecraw. “Me no need sit!” He stormed. “Me need find these froggie’s parents and children and cook dem and eat dem over big fire while dey scream for mercy!!!” “You sure?” said the warrior, “Me have bandage, me fix you up gud.” Despite all reason, Gobblecraw responded “Baugh, dem just skratcd me sum, me fine, no need bandage.” “Ha, ha!” exclaimed the other, “Me like you.” And delivered a slap on Gobblecraw’s back that had it been done a minute before might have finished him off. “You tuf and gud fiter, wana join me guild?”
